KVH to Open Second Tokyo Data Center

KVH Co., Ltd., a leading provider of IT and communication services in Japan, announced today that KVH Tokyo Data Center 2 (TDC2), its second commercially available data center in the Tokyo area will be completed and operational by February 2011. Located just outside of Tokyo in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, KVH TDC2 will effectively address the increasing need for turn-key, high-specification data center space for corporations demanding high power and cooling capacity.

KVH TDC2, which will also serve as one of the core data centers for housing KVH’s recently announced cloud services platform, adds 4,000 net square meters of IT server space to KVH’s data center capacity in Tokyo. With approximately 30,000 square meters of land available on the Inzai property for future expansion, KVH will be able to support up to 16,000 net square meters of IT server capacity.

“KVH realizes that in a world of ever increasing computing capabilities, power, not space, is the critical and scarce resource within the data center facility,” said Miyuki Suzuki, KVH CEO. “KVH’s TDC2 has been designed to push the limits on power with the goal of satisfying customers’ current and future power needs.. With the possibility of additional data center space on this property, we will be able to continue to incorporate the latest power, cooling and green technologies as they evolve and subsequently provide ‘future-proofing’ to our customers.”

KVH TDC2 is ideal for enterprise customers that require high power densities and cooling capabilities with efficiency and resilience. The data center’s features include:

• Dedicated halls available in configurations of 460 or 1000 square meters of IT space supplied with a minimum of 1.8 kW per square meter of critical load across the server room floor

• Highly efficient cooling system to support high density solutions with up to 6 kW per rack standard

• Supplemental cooling options available to accommodate up to 20 kW per rack

• Power via diverse routes to each server room, with Uninterruptable Power Supplies (UPS) in either 2N or block-redundant configurations and compartmentalized by floor

• Floor loading capability of 850 kg per square meter on the raised floor, 1000 kg per square meter on the slab to support the weight of heavy racks and large equipment

• Consolidation of IT equipment into fewer racks due to power and cooling capabilities

Approximately 40 minutes from the central Tokyo business district by a new high-speed train link opening in July 2010, Inzai City will be 25 minutes travel time via the same train line in the opposite direction to Narita International Airport, providing easy accessibility to KVH TDC2. At the same time, Inzai is farther away from active fault-lines and tectonic plate boundaries than Tokyo and thus meets Japan FISC (The Center for Financial Industry Information Systems) guidelines as a business continuity planning (BCP) site for companies with a primary data center in Tokyo. As such, the area is recognized as a ‘‘disaster recovery location.’’

In addition to boasting market leading specifications for data centers, KVH TDC2 also incorporates the latest “green IT” technologies and design features to maximize efficiency and reduce overall power consumption of the facility. These features include waterside free cooling from fall to spring to reduce power consumption, high-efficiency equipment that adjusts output based on need, and strictly maintained humidity levels within server halls allowing for higher temperature set points. Given these power-efficient design elements, KVH TDC2 is forecasted to achieve an annual average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of less than 1.5, far exceeding the industry standard of 2.0.
