KVH to Build Next Generation Optical Backbone Network

KVH Co., Ltd. announced October 27 that it will build a new high-speed, high-capacity next generation optical fiber backbone network to meet increasing demand for multi-gigabit class Ethernet services. The first phase of development, covering the network’s main access points in the metropolitan area such as KVH Tokyo Data center, is scheduled for completion within this year. In subsequent phases, the network will expand to other neighboring areas including Yokohama, Kanagawa and Inzai, Chiba where a new KVH Data Center will open in 2011.

Through the new network, KVH will offer high bandwidth Ethernet services of 1Gbps and 10Gbps with faster delivery time and lower latency to enterprises and service providers especially those within the financial service industry that require high service quality and ultra low latency. In November, 2010, KVH will also launch 4Gbps and 10Gbps Fibre Channel services, the first of such services available in Japan.

Well suited for the needs of financial services customers, these offerings will enable real-time transmission of large volumes of data required for disaster recovery and Storage Area Networks (SAN).

Leveraging Infinera’s technology, KVH’s new network will utilize a newly developed digital optical networks architecture that delivers industry leading network speed, availability, resilience and scalability. This network will also allow KVH faster provisioning of ultra high-speed services such as 10Gbps Ethernet today and 100Gbps Ethernet in the near future, as well as enable KVH to better serve cloud computing services providers by using the service as a cloud platform for connecting multiple data centers.

With the spread of high-speed electronic trading and cloud computing services, demand from financial services customers has risen sharply for rapid transmission of large volumes of data and high-bandwidth connections between data centers. Richard Warley, CEO of KVH, notes, “To meet evolving market needs, KVH has decided to invest in building this new backbone network. Along with the opening of our new Tokyo Data Center in February of 2011, this represents an important milestone in making strategic investments to uphold our commitment to serving the needs of our financial services customers. We currently operate the lowest latency network in Japan’s major metropolitan areas and this investment will further differentiate our services with improved speed and quality. We aim to lead the market through innovative services expansion to grow our business and enhance customer satisfaction.”
