HKEX July Trading Statistics
The HKEX reported August 6th that 17,501,660 trades were executed on its Mainboard in the month of July, 2009 valued at 1,516 Billion HKD (~194 Billion USD). Turnover and market value were down 5% and 6.3% respectively from June but represented the 2nd busiest month at Hong Kong’s premier bourse.
At the end of July the HKEX boasted 1278 listed companies with a market capitalization of 15.9 trillion HKD (~2 trillion USD).
There were 151 H Share names listed in July and 96 Red Chip stocks. (H Shares are PRC registered companies while Red Chips are not registered in the PRC but 30% of shares are controlled by a PRC entity).
On the derivatives side the Hang Seng Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index rose by 11.9% and 10.6% respectively. Open interest rose 12.1% compared to June to 176,956 contracts across all equity Index Futures.
However volume across the big 3 index futures contracts contracted on average by 9.2%. The Hang Seng Index Futures traded 86,942 contracts, the Mini Hang Seng Index Futures traded 41,941 contracts and the H-shares Index Futures executed 45,879 contracts during the month of July.
